Radon Testing

A radon test is taken to determine the amount of radon inside the house. Radon is a radioactive gas that is caused by the breakdown of uranium in the ground. Because radon is a light gas it will flow from the ground up through the house, as it enters the house it can become trapped causing higher amounts of radon to collect inside the house.

Radon testing is the only way to know for sure if there’s any uranium in your home. Radons are a type of gas that comes from breaking down rocks and dirt, which have been exposed over time due to soil erosion or mining activities near us. It will flow through our houses until it gets trapped against an object like wood flooring. So depending on where you live may affect how much exposure YOU receive! If your home has a high concentration of radon, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s unsafe. However, long-term exposure can increase your risk for lung cancer.

There are two types of radon tests: short-term and long-term. Short-term tests will give you results within a few days. While long-term tests will take at least three months to complete. If you’re concerned about your exposure to radon and want to have radon testing, it’s best to use a long-term test.

If your home does have elevated levels of radon, there are ways to mitigate the gas. Radon mitigation systems can be installed by a qualified professional, and they work by drawing the gas away from your home and venting it into the atmosphere. These systems are typically very effective, and they can help to reduce your exposure to radon.
